Terri's mother, Eileen, asks her for help when her husband (Terri's father), Ryan, bashes her. Eileen refuses to go to hospital and Terri asks Mitch to come to her flat to treat her. Mitch discovers Terri has never talked to her mother about the domestic violence. He urges her to persuade Eileen to leave Ryan. Terri tries, but all the years of pretence make it impossible for mother and daughter to be honest with each other. Terri thinks she can try again in the morning but when she gets up she finds that Eileen has gone home to Ryan. Working a night shift, Von nurses Lillian Gehler, who has been in a car accident with her husband. Lillian is told her husband is in the Intensive Care Unit but she continues to ask why he does not come to visit. At first Von believes the woman's disorientation and anxiety are the result of the anaesthetic but she soon realises Lillian has no short-term memory.
