Connor enters the ward to confront a tense exchange between a mild-mannered young man, Scott, and a middle-aged woman, Margaret, demanding to be allowed to see her dying son — alone. Connor's sympathy for Margaret is secured when he witnesses a tearful bedside reunion with her emaciated son.
