Spicks and Specks (2005)
Spicks and Specks (2005)
Adam Hills, one of Australia's favourite comedians and winner of Edinburgh's Best of the Fest award, is joined by two team captains, comedian and actor Alan Brough and radio breakfast announcer Myf Warhurst, as well as brave personalities who enjoy having long forgotten embarrassing stories laughed about on national television. Two teams go head to head as they sing, shout and delve deep into the recesses of their collective minds to help earn their team an extremely inglorious victory.

Myf's team features dancer and actor David Page - who gets a bit of shock when he sees some footage of himself as a young man from The Paul Hogan Show - and Irish comedian Jason Byrne who gives us an insight into the mind of an elderly Irish woman when he's riding the bike during 'Malvern Stars on 45'. Chloe Dallimore proves she's certainly got and knows how to flaunt it when she closes the show with 'If You've Got It, Flaunt It' from The Producers.

2x12 Ali McGregor, Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt & Meshel Laurie

03 May, 2006 10:45 am
This week on 'Spicks and Specks' we have an extra special show for y'all. Joining us this week not only do we have the stunning Ali McGregor and the uproarious Meshel Laurie but we also have Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi from Status Quo. That's right, you heard me right, Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi from Status Quo. They've rocked Live Aid (the first one), they've rocked all over the world (really, all over) and they've rocked their tour bus (don't ask) and now they're set to rock 'Spicks and Specks'. Hold onto your hats and give your Mum a valium. It's going to be a ripper.

17 May, 2006 10:45 am
The Man From Snowy River, Tom Burlinson, sings Bob Dylan in the style of Frank Sinatra. An Australian comedienne wowing them in England, Lulu McClatchy, sings from the 1980s. PNG singing sensation Ngaiire sings in Pidgin. And Hamish Blake doesn't sing at all. Thankfully. All that and more this week on Spicks and Specks.

2x15 Yumi Stynes, Wilbur Wilde, Jeff Duff & Dave O'Neil

24 May, 2006 10:45 am
This week's guests are Channel V host Yumi Stynes, supercool saxophonist Wilbur Wilde, from 70s rock icons Kush, the wonderfully strange Jeff Duff and just a suburban boy, comedian Dave O'Neil. And don't miss the most controversial ending we could think of...

2x16 Jon English, Fiona O'Loughlin, Jon Toogood & Frank Woodley

31 May, 2006 10:45 am
Myf really hits it off with the singer/guitarist from New Zealand hard rockers 'Shihad', Jon Toogood. Jon Toogood really hits it off with his namesake, legendary Australian singer, Jon English. Comedian Fiona O'Loughlin really hits it off with Jon English - and quite frankly, scares him as well. And Frank Woodley hits it off with everyone. Why don't you hit it off with 'Spicks and Specks' this week on ABC TV.

2x17 Tiffany Speight, Colin Lane, Stephen Cummings & Denise Scott

07 June, 2006 10:45 am
In their ongoing battle for supremacy Alan and Myf are joined by opera singer Tiffany Speight, comedian Colin Lane, singer/songwriter Stephen Cummings and comedian and radio broadcaster Denise Scott. 14 June, 2006 10:45 am
Member of folk singing royalty Sarah Lee Guthrie. Comedian and Spicks and Specks debutant Gary Eck. The scot from down-under Colin Hay. And the musically challenged Hamish Blake. You'll see how Clint Eastwood would play Maria from the Sound Of Music, what Arlo Guthrie would have been given if he had been a busker and a very weird air flute version of Down Under.

2x19 Lisa McCune, Colin Lane, Toby Martin & Meshel Laurie

21 June, 2006 10:45 am
The very musical former Blue Heeler, Lisa McCune. The man with the face of a matinee idol and the soul of a villain, Colin Lane. The young man from Young Group who will be Forever Young, Toby Martin. And the girl who is just so Mischa Barton on the inside, Meshel Laurie. You'll find out all about John Wood in stilettos, what Courtney Love did with Nirvana's song catalogue and what happend to Paris Hilton's mobile phone.

2x20 Melinda Schneider, Cal Wilson, Leo Sayer & Dave O'Neil

28 June, 2006 10:45 am
The one-man band with a number one hit on his hands Leo Sayer. A little bit country singer Melinda Schneider. Pirate-channelling comedian Cal Wilson. And the scruffily attractive Dave O'Neil. We take a step to the right with some rock opera, the panel goes Latin with Cuban rhythms from Sally Ford and the Pachuco Playboys, and Leo is lent a hand at one of his concerts.

2x21 Renée Geyer, Wilbur Wilde, Molly Meldrum & Mikey Robins

05 July, 2006 10:45 am
In a Countdown special, the slapped and tackled Molly Meldrum hears voices from the past. Mikey Robins holds hands with Molly. And Wilbur Wilde and Renee Geyer reminisce about appearing on Countdown. You'll find out about Myf's regular viewing date with Countdown while Renee word-associates her way to a correct answer and Wilbur goes for a specky with his specs on in a star-studded footy match finale.

Top songster Colleen Hewitt runs us through her sob-fest video of "Wind Beneath My Wings" while comedian Frank Woodley wears his nose on his sleeve. Comedian and radio announcer Adam Richard shares his view of the obligatory performance style for Australian Idol hopefuls. Gird your loins for an outstanding Know Your Product topic that has the panel in a dither, stay strong for Frank wanting everyone to call Paul Kelly "Leaky", and brace yourself for an intense rendition of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" by the beautiful Adam Richard.

2x23 Simon Tedeschi, Julia Morris, Lee Simon & Dave O'Neil

26 July, 2006 10:45 am
Our guests are über entertainer Denise Drysdale, comedian Denise Scott, singer/songwriter and ARIA nominee, Lior, and Stephen Gates, one pod of musical funsters, Tripod. Tonight a lone bagpiper puts the wind up our guests when they have to guess the songs he plays and the two Denises suspect they may share more than a name. Lior enlists some percussive assistance from the audience in Substitute, Myf tells us about a romantic approach in a Mildura nightclub that no girl could resist, and a disgruntled Gatesy musically laments having to share his playout with the end credits.

02 August, 2006 10:45 am
Our guests are oboe player Diana Doherty, Scared Weird Little Guy John Chaplin-Fleming, writer of the musical "Dusty" and showbiz connoisseur John-Michael Howson, and the slightly popular Hamish Blake. John Chaplin-Fleming tells us how he incited a riot at a Scared Weird Little Guys concert, Hamish is shocked to get one question correct, and just what the heck is John-Michael drawing in Cover Versions? And, succumbing to the antics of Hamish Blake, Diana Doherty giggles her way through a performance of the theme from the Star Wars Cantina scene.

2x26 Sharon Jones, Meshel Laurie, Martin Plaza & Dave O'Neil

09 August, 2006 10:45 am
Guests tonight are U.S. soul singer Sharon Jones, vicarious soul sister Meshel Laurie, soulful Mental As Anything frontman Martin Plaza, and the soul of wit, comedian Dave O'Neil. Sharon Jones reveals a captivating previous occupation, Dave nails his one-hit wonders in Know Your Product and Meshel shines in a very different Look What They've Done To My Song Ma. We've also managed to squeeze in a Something's Missing segment featuring more dodgy album covers and if a barking-mad Substitute book doesn't have you enthralled, we wrap it up with a whole bunch of one-hit wonders to reminisce about.

16 August, 2006 10:45 am
Contributing to tonight's high jinks are comedian and radio commentator Amanda Keller, movie producer Al Clark, singer Angie Hart and the hair-raising Frank Woodley. 30 August, 2006 10:45 am
Yodelling up a storm tonight is Mary Schneider, joined by international DJ Carl Cox, Scaredy Rusty Berther, and the mostly well-behaved Meshel Laurie. There's a world of interest when Carl tells us how he spent the dawn of the millennium and there's an odd-couple moment when Mary identifies the eclectic rocker who uses her music on stage. In other news, Rusty nails his record labels topic in Know Your Product, Sir Mix and Matchalot unearths the longest ever album title, and Myf is passionate about souveniring her team's Substitute book.

2x30 Kirsty McCahon, Hamish Blake, MC Suffa & Frank Woodley

06 September, 2006 10:45 am
Guests include classical double bassist Kirsty McCahon, Adelaide hip-hopper MC Suffa, the disarmingly distracted Frank Woodley, and the always scream-worthy Hamish Blake. In tonight's quest for domination, the teams are given five words to identify songs in Word Up and take a crack at interpreting some dubious artistry in Cover Versions. Hamish wonders why Kirsty makes do with her antiquated double bass when she could buy a nice new shiny one, we all wonder if Alan has been moonlighting in a parallel universe, and if you ever wondered what a Klezmer band was, don't miss the wonderful Klezmeritis in Look What They've Done To My Song Ma.

2x31 Debra Byrne, Jesse Griffin, Andy Anderson & Dave O'Neil

13 September, 2006 10:45 am
Hilarity overload tonight with actor and singer Debra Byrne, actor and singer Jesse Griffin, actor and singer Andy Anderson and ..... Dave O'Neil. In the hirsute of happiness, we've unearthed some footage of an impressively follicled Andy singing with Running Jumping Standing Still, and Jesse fondly recalls his reggae phase featuring redhead dreads. Look What They've Done To My Song Ma proves a challenge for everyone except the audience, there are some truly weird album covers in Something's Missing, and Jesse leaves no philosophical stone unturned in his closing song.

2x32 Martha Wainwright, Ross Noble, Rob Mills & Hamish Blake

20 September, 2006 10:45 am
Vying for victory are Canadian alternative country singer Martha Wainwright, Oz Idol contender Rob Mills, lovable lunatic Ross Noble, and just plain adorable Hamish Blake. In tonight's contest Martha and Ross lock horns and prove opposites don't necessarily attract, while Millsy dishes the dirt and comes clean about Paris Hilton. The teams wrestle with more silly scenarios in One Out of Three Ain't Bad, the Wainwright musical lineage is apparent when Martha sings in Substitute, and Millsy's closing tuneful tribute is a trip.

2x33 Patience Hodgson, Jonathan Biggins, Val Jellay & Frank Woodley

27 September, 2006 10:45 am
Tonight we test the smarts of beguiling Patience Hodgson from The Grates, urbane wunderkind Jonathan Biggins, venerable vaudevillian Val Jellay, and wickedly whimsical Frank Woodley. Val reminisces about the good and not so good old days in showbiz, and we learn about Patience's penchant for ribbons, sock puppets and skeletons. One Out of Three Ain't Bad features stories about John Cage and Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Jonathan trounces all comers in Substitute, and we wrap it all up with a truly classy closer that will have you straining to hear more.

04 October, 2006 10:45 am
We push the boat out with soprano Antoinette Halloran, comedian and writer Anthony Morgan, Steve Mallinder from electronic outfit Cabaret Voltaire, and crowd-pleasing comedian Denise Scott. Antoinette's connection with Elvis Costello is noted a few thousand times, and Steve's days of anonymity as a uni lecturer are numbered when we show some bygone Cabaret Voltaire footage. Vocal gymnast Mal Webb takes Look What They've Done To My Song to a wonderfully strange new level, Please Please Tell Me Now resurrects a classic video that puts Anthony in a spin, and Myf shows how it's done when she sings in Substitute.

2x35 Ella Hooper, Akmal Saleh, Robin Lumley & Hamish Blake

11 October, 2006 10:45 am
Taking a shot at glory tonight are longstanding fave Ella Hooper, cheeky comedian Akmal Salek, effusive music legend Robin Lumley, and house hottie Hamish Blake. Akmal reveals why Richard Branson won't be calling any time soon, and Robin treats us to a show-and-tell from his days in David Bowie's band. Our teams try to work out celebrity connections in Common People, the bike returns for a workout in Malvern Stars on 45, and keep a lookout for the finale which features some vintage Australian prog rock with a twist.

2x36 Rebecca Barnard, Tim Minchin, Mike Brady & Frank Woodley

18 October, 2006 10:45 am
Striving for best on ground tonight are singer/songwriter Mike Brady, comedian Frank Woodley, singer Rebecca Barnard, and musical comedian Tim Minchin. Mike, Myf and Frank contest the mark with admirable air-guitar action in Know Your Product, and bluegrass band Hard Drive yee-haa up a storm in Look What They've Done To My Song Ma. Mike reports on the endurance of "Up There Cazaly", Frank is tackled on an issue of crowd participation, while Tim and Adam play on in a touching and possibly out-of-bounds musical playout.

2x37 Grace Knight, Adam Rozenbachs, Dan Kelly & Fiona O'Loughlin

25 October, 2006 10:45 am
Painting the studio red tonight are ex-Euroglider Grace Knight, Alpha Male Dan Kelly, comedian Adam Rozenbachs, and feisty Fiona O'Loughlin. Enjoy embarrassing anecdotes aplenty tonight with Grace, Fiona and Dan respectively wincing about a steamy video clip, a cross-dressing husband and a tangled guitar lead. Common People gets the better of Myf's team, Beatrix Potter gets a rock and roll overhaul in Substitute, and our video-clip closer demonstrates a novel way to get back in the good books with the missus.

2x38 Ian Turpie, Cal Wilson, Dave Graney & Dave O'Neil

01 November, 2006 8:45 am
Guests du jour are entertainer extraordinaire Ian Turpie, perky Kiwi comedian Cal Wilson, well-informed funster Dave O'Neil and the incomparable Dave Graney. Laugh-out-loud showbiz stories are de rigueur tonight when Dave Graney and Turps recall past escapades, and we discover that the other Dave is obsessed with Nickelback, and not in a good way. Please Please Tell Me Now reveals Cal's affinity for basic maths, Word Up reveals Cal's ignorance of geography, and le teams have a mon dieu! moment when Dave Graney reveals a Gallic penchant in Substitute.
