The episode documents PC Jim Carver's first day at Sun Hill Police Station, where he is partnered with experienced WPC June Ackland. It isn't specified how long Ackland has been at Sun Hill, but it appears to have been substantial even at this point as she is highly respected. The day is an eventful one; the pair's first assignment together leads them to discovering a decomposing woman's body in her bath. Later whilst on patrol Jim encounters a rude youngster (Gary Hailes) and influenced by comments made by older officers at the station decides to clip him round the ear. This action results in him receiving a reprimand at the station from Sergeant Wilding. Fortunately for Carver, the boy's father approves of his son's treatment, and thus no further action is taken. June Ackland and Dave Litten have been in an on-again off-again relationship, and whenever they cross paths both tend to go silent making other members of their relief uncomfortable. D.S. Fox is convinced that P.C. Santini was involved in the murder of Jessica Orton, but her D.C.I. thinks she has lost all objectivity.

Hollis returns home from work to find a VHS video which has been posted through his letterbox. The video, which was recorded just hours before Taviner's capture, is a personal message from Taviner to Hollis. On the video, Taviner explains that the noise of a police car is one he used to love, but now hates. He also explains that despite all of his misgivings, he did truly set out to be an upstanding member of the community and lay down the law. He also apologises for his part in the Sun Hill fire, and claims that throughout his career as an officer, Hollis was his best friend. The video finishes with Taviner apologizing for all of the times he was horrible to Hollis, and regrets ever leaving him behind.

Ackland, Hollis and Best find it a quiet night at the station, Reg digs out a photo album with memories and they recall some of the finest moments of the past twenty-one years, including a sniper with a grudge against Ackland, Burnside receiving stick from Reid, Lines' children being held up in a bank robbery, Ramsey being shot and Roach being fired for punching Monroe

Stamp brings surprise guest in to custody - former PC George Garfield. They start reminiscing about the past. Ackland recalls the death of PC Melvin, a large HGV tanker spewing its load over the streets of Sun Hill, and the Sun Hill firebombing, during which six much-loved officers died - Worrell, Spears, Harker, Monroe, Riley and Hayward - as well as the events leading up to the attack, which saw the death of Conway.

PC Kerry Young's story is told through the eyes of her nemesis, PC Gabriel Kent. Gabriel gives snapshots of Kerry from her early relationships with officers at Sun Hill through to her tragic death.
