Gary Lineker returns with highlights and goals from the opening day of the 2011/12 Premier League season in Saturday's Match of the Day. Liverpool spent heavily during the summer, and their new signings will be eager to impress against Sunderland, particularly Jordan Henderson, who could make his Reds debut against the club he left just two months ago. Fellow midfielder Stewart Downing, who joined from Aston Villa, could also play his first competitive game for Kenny Dalglish's side. Arsenal take on Newcastle at St James' Park, scene of the Gunners' incredible collapse last season, when they surrendered a four-goal lead to draw 4-4. QPR return to the top flight after a 15-year absence, with Bolton providing the opposition at Loftus Road, while fellow newboys Norwich visit Wigan. Contests between the two sides have been close in recent seasons with five of the last eight matches ending 1-1, including both games last term. Could either team find a winner this time around? A much-changed Sunderland side faced local rivals Newcastle at the Stadium of Light hoping to improve on a poor home Premier League record against the Magpies. The Black Cats have won only one of eight previous contents. Swansea's first top flight home game in 28 years was against Wigan, managed by their former boss Roberto Martinez.

The pick of the action includes newly-promoted Norwich's trip to Chelsea, and the West Midlands derby between Aston Villa and Wolves. Chelsea have beaten Norwich 4-0 in their last two encounters at Stamford Bridge, although the Canaries lead their illustrious opponents by four wins to three in Premier League meetings. Wolves claimed their first win against neighbours Aston Villa for 31 years in March. Matt Jarvis scored the only goal to help keep Mick McCarthy's side in the top flight at the expense of a Birmingham side managed by Alex McLeish, now in charge at Villa. Other games include Liverpool against Bolton, Swansea at home to Sunderland, QPR's trip to Wigan and Blackburn v Everton.

Elsewhere, Manchester United hosted Norwich City, a side they have only dropped two points against from a possible 24 during the Premier League era. West Brom travelled to Sunderland looking for a repeat of their 3-2 comeback victory last April, and Manchester City visited Ewood Park, a happy hunting ground for them in recent seasons with back-to-back wins.

Mario Balotelli scored a hat-trick for Roberto Mancini's side in a 4-0 home win in this fixture in 2010. Resurgent Newcastle are primed to provide a stern test of their credentials. Champions League-chasing Arsenal faced Stoke at the Britannia Stadium beleaguered Liverpool had a tricky trip to play Norwich at Carrow Road. The Canaries forced a draw at Anfield earlier in the season, and have proved tough to beat at home in what has been an excellent return to the Premier League for Paul Lambert's side. Elsewhere, Everton hosted Fulham, Wolves took on Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, Sunderland faced Bolton and Wigan welcomed Newcastle to the DW Stadium.

Gary Lineker presents highlights from the crucial clash between Manchester City and Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. The bitter cross-city rivals have been battling out at the top of the Premier League all season, and much could rest on this match. Roberto Mancini's City side produced one of the best results in the club's history when they beat Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils 6-1 at Old Trafford earlier in the season. But United are unbeaten in their last three league visits to City, conceding just one goal in those games, and they also beat Mancini's side in the FA Cup third round back in January.

Newcastle's quest for European qualification sees them host a Manchester City side who inflicted the Magpies' first defeat of the season back in November. Alan Pardew's men have arguably been the Premier League's surprise package this season, with the likes of Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba and Hatem Ben Arfa giving the Tyneside team real cutting edge. Those three may fancy their chances against Roberto Mancini's side, whose form has dipped in the second half of the season. City have spent the entire campaign battling with title rivals Manchester United, who face Swansea in their final home game of the season. The first Welsh side to play in the Premier League, the Swans have not only comfortably avoided relegation, they have also played with style. Their manager, Brendan Rodgers, is unlikely to abandon his passing

Gary Lineker presents highlights of what promises to be the most dramatic ever finishes to a Premier League season. One of the two Manchester clubs will win the title. They start the day level on points: City host relegation-threatened QPR, United travel to Sunderland. Elsewhere, Bolton travel to Stoke knowing they have to win to have a chance of avoiding relegation. And Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle and Chelsea are all hoping to clinch European qualification. There are ten games in total, plus Goal of the Season.
